![]() ![]() Speaking as someone who can look into the above Pyra’s eyes and not traumatically recoil, I like Tora. This is the face of a woman who just caught you rummaging through her sock drawer. They don’t want to be on the receiving end of society’s death stare and the blunt-force trauma that comes with. They don’t want to live in a house where the lawn deer has to be indoors. They don’t want to have to rely on girls who aren’t real for female companionship (in Tora’s case, robot ones). They don’t want to be the one guy out of all their friends who can’t do something (in Tora’s case, become an authentic Driver). What they’re focused on is hiding from the fears they personally carry - deep-seated ones that Tora causes to surface. Is the image that forms from this one of faultless virtue? Of course not, but at the end of the day these players never actually cared about that. Riki could cheat on Oka at his leisure, and arguably already has (with Melia) considering his sexuality/cuddling preference overlap. These people would love to be Riki, because Riki is in a position of power. This is because the aforementioned fans are blind to Riki’s own questionable behavior due to how it’s asserted - with dominance. But thing is…so is Riki, and Riki isn’t forced to undergo this same level of scrutiny. They likely see him differently from other “weird” characters due to the fact that he’s a main playable party member and thus they’re expected to insert themselves into that role. There are XC2 fans who you would think are on public trial with how often they insist they don’t endorse Tora’s eccentricities. The answer is obvious: Because they see too much of Tora in themselves.īut “This excellent opportunity to share Masterpon’s research with group”, says Poppi. In agendas respectively driven by XC1 purism and controversial clickbait, Tora’s role is clear, but what’s the explanation for why actual XC2 fans could be as offended by him as they are? Fans of Tora’s game? ![]() Tora haters foreign to the community are embarrassed to have…the medium associated with him at all, and proceed to upload long YouTube videos about why Tora is socially problematic and a “sexist muppet”. Tora haters on the XC2 side are embarrassed to have their game associated with him. Tora haters on the XC1 side are embarrassed to have their series associated with him. Virgin Tora” comparison is relevant because it’s a thing commonly accepted across fanbase lines. And while all that could and probably should qualify as propaganda (should I feel bad for spreading it?), the “Chad Riki vs. The house he lives in is huge! He’s Riki. He doesn’t come across as sometimes cute, creepy at others. He receives genuine affection from others in his party. His power comes from himself and not robot girl blueprints given to him by his dadapon. He is a self-proclaimed “Heropon” with Shulk and company as his “sidekicks”. “Tail-wiggle dance protocol” was seconds away.Ĭonversely, Riki is a husband and father of 11. He lives in the equivalent of a rundown opium den. His robot waifu’s combat functionality is an invention of his Grampypon and Dadapon, meaning he can only take full credit for inessentials (not all of which he cares to share with friends). His reactions to characters finding out only makes things worse. He has frequent instances of failing to keep his deviant fetishes secret. He’s not the most socially savvy Nopon in the multiverse, and that’s not a curse he’s burdened with simply because of his race and associated speech patterns. Tora, unlike say Kasandra’s previous driver Noporikh, lacks the affinity needed to become a natural Driver. Let’s try to see where they’re coming from. Tora - XC2’s token Nopon party member who compared to Riki faces more uphill battles in his personality and relationships - is often used to drive the narrative that Riki and the rest of the XC1 cast are who most people would prefer to assume the collective role of, and therefore why XC1 is the Xenoblade most should prefer to play. ![]() “Xenoblade” having not yet found its footing has led to much anxiety about where the series will and should go, to the point where hostility between XC1 fans and XC2 fans is far greater than what is between them and the people who hate the entire series. Years later the mindset persisted, since Xenoblade Chronicles 2 featured “anime” tropes and artwork that ran counter to the more “realistic” presentation offered by the original game. The existence of Xenoblade Chronicles 1 “elitists” is not a new phenomenon - it’s been a thing since Xenoblade Chronicles X in which fans were anxious about what path the IP would take in the long term. ![]() When immense dislike of Tora is immediately followed up by equally immense praise of Riki, there’s a good chance that Tora is being used as a whipping boy for an XC1 fan’s dislike of XC2 as a whole. ![]()
